As an adult, it’s natural to want to build a life of your own. Unfortunately, a bad credit score can dash your dreams, making it much more difficult to do things that most adults must do. It’s harder to buy or rent a place to live; it’s hard to buy a car; it’s hard to get a loan. Luckily, you can turn it around. Here are some ways to do that.

If you are trying to repair your credit report, remember that not all debts are considered equal, especially major problems like bankruptcies or foreclosures. Once foreclosure proceedings finish, your credit score will immediately begin to improve, but most lenders will not give you another mortgage for at least two years after the foreclosure, no matter how good your credit score is.

  • Pay Your Bills On Time – One of the biggest things you can do to repair you credit is to make all your payments on time. Each time you miss a payment your credit score decreases. By paying on time for an extended amount of time you are showing stability and your credit score will increase accordingly.
  • Avoid CPN Numbers – Unethical credit repair companies may promise to give you a new credit identity in order to raise your credit score, beware. In order to do this, they may have an EIN tax number issued to you by the IRS, or they may use a stolen social security number in place of yours. Both are deceptive and/or illegal practices.
  • Apply for a Secured Credit Card – If you are trying to repair extremely poor credit and you can’t get a credit card, consider a secured credit card. A secured credit card will give you a credit limit equal to the amount you deposit. It allows you to regain your credit score at minimal risk to the lender.
  • Avoid Credit Repair Scams – So you are looking for professional help in repairing your credit and wish to seek the services of an ethical company. There are certain signs that warn you that a company is probably one you do not wish to use. If a prospective company does not inform you of your rights and things you can do for yourself for free to repair your credit, they are probably not want that you wish to hire.

Don’t let bad credit prevent you from doing the things you want to do. Commit to improving your credit score as much as you can and start right now. By following these tips, you’ll repair your credit enough that you aren’t stuck anymore and can move on with your life.
